Why Maintain Your Fire Extinguishers?

They are portable, light enough for most adults to carry to a fire, and have enough capacity to make a difference on fires before the fire takes a real hold of the situation. It’s those first few minutes that these devices can save property and life.
In this short Blog we ask the question Why Maintain Your Fire Extinguishers?
The typical fire extinguisher is usually less than $200. Easily obtainable across most cities.
Fire Extinguishers do expire; they are pressurised vessels and require maintenance or replacement at regular intervals. They should be checked (not tested) every 6 months and replaced (or pressured tested) every 5 years.
Apart from complete failure to operate, what else can happen with fire extinguishers if they are not looked after?
Why Replace or Pressure Test your extinguisher every Five years?
The gauge on top of the fire extinguisher may show the extinguisher has the correct pressure, but that doesn’t exclude the need for checks and/or replacement.
With the passage of time, fire extinguishers that have been activated and may continue to lose pressure. Fire extinguishers should be replaced if part used and fully used.
There may be a build-up of the extinguishing agent inside hoses, gaskets, springs, and O-rings may prevent the extinguisher from working properly the next time it’s use. Stiff springs, blocked hoses and tubes, and other parts may not work properly when an extinguisher isn’t maintained after use.
Environmental forces and intentional acts may cause problems with extinguishers?
Typical Problems that generate faults with fire extinguishers include a harsh environment. Not all fire extinguishers are in an office or shop. Many are placed in factories, car parks and outside.
